yeah. they lured me back in. don't ask how. i don't know.
They meet in a bar.
Serena’s thrown a party. It was a courtesy invitation. She’s better at those than Dan is.
He is on his third wife. She is making a movie that is not about him.
“Vanessa.” His teeth are still very white. “It’s been a long time.”
The last time she saw him, she was protesting at one of his cousin’s elections. What was the cause? Even she can’t keep up with them, these days.
“Yeah. You’re looking good, Archibald.”
“So are you.”
(He’s lying. That’s okay, too.)
His third wife is Jenny Humphrey.
“You don’t, um, care, do you?”
She puts up a hand. They are sitting in an outdoor café. Dan is drinking his coffee black like the emo poet he is. The sun makes her eyes sting.
“No, why would I care?”
“Don’t be stupid, Dan. We were sixteen.”
She doesn’t come to the wedding. The papers say that Chuck Bas threw a party the size of an island for his best friend’s third trip down the aisle.
They are all still sixteen.
“Venice was fun.”
He is drunk. She wrinkles her nose. He thinks she looks like Blair when she does that.
“Venice was fun. We should go again.”
“Not now, Nate.”
She moves to shut the door. He sticks his foot in it.
“I think I’ll wait till the ink is dry on this one.”
“I saw Dan.”
“He said you’re seeing someone. He said you have a boyfriend.”
Nate’s mouth turns down at the corners. He is sulking apparently.
“I repeat, so?”
“You’re married, Nate.”
“Yeah.” His head bobs up and down. It’s almost dawn. All golden and dirty. “I am.”
“So, maybe you should leave.”
“We’ll always have Venice, Vanessa.”
“Get out of here.”
She is laughing when she slams the door.
He didn’t fuck her when he was married to Blair.
Funny how that feels like an insult.
“Jenny asked me to be a bridesmaid,” she tells her sister.
“Hey, we’re friends.”
“You know what you should do—“
“Say yes. Tell her you want to find her the band.”
“Nate might be a fan but I don’t think Jenny will let your lesbian punk into her wedding, Ruby.”
“It was worth a shot.”
Her movie is about a man with three girls, one for love, one for fun and one for sex.
The lead is tall and blonde and clueless and yeah, she’s got a bit of a—
It’s not really her movie, is it?
She walks away from him at the bar. (Victory, you know.) Her color is high. She is breathing very fast.
Serena catches her on the way out.
“Was that Nate?”
“He’s still got a bit of a thing for you, you know.”
“You don’t say.”
So, the boy had many girls.
He never really needed her.
